Who are the characters, and why are they important? Authors use characters to connect you to the story. Can you relate to the main character? Does one of the characters remind you of someone you know?
When we talk about characters in a story, we can describe them in several ways. One way is by describing their physical characteristics... they are tall, thin, freckled; we can also talk about their personality traits....they are brave, shy, angry; and we can also talk about their function in the story.
There is specific vocabulary we use to talk about characters in a story. For example:
A protagonist is the character the story is mainly about - usually the hero or good guy;
An antagonist is a the character that opposes or makes trouble for the protagonist;
Minor characters populate the story and help us understand the main character(s); and
Characterization, which is how the author reveals a character's personality, such as appearance, actions, dialogue (conversations between characters), and motivation (what makes the character act the way he/she does).
Comment to this post with observations you have made about the characters in the story you are reading.
The protagonist is Roy. His traits are reading comic books, being curious, and he is an only child. I do not know who is the antagonist yet.
ReplyDeleteAlex,
DeleteIs reading comic books really a trait? What is the trait that would make people interested in reading comic books? Is he curious, bored, imaginative?
Have you discovered who the antagonist(s) is/are yet?
The protagonist is Ralph. He is a go getter and very brave. I think the antagonist is the maid because Ralph's family is afraid of her, because she wants to get rid of the mice. The minor characters are Ralph's family, Keith's Mom and Dad and the sleepy man with his dog.
ReplyDeleteCanyon,
DeleteWhy do you think the author made Ralph the protagonist instead of Keith?
I think the author did this because it's more interesting to read about a mouse, especially riding a motorcycle.
DeleteSome characters in the story so far are Ralph the mouse, Keith the boy, Tony the bellhop, Ralph's mom, and Keith's parents. The protagonist of the story is Ralph, and the antagonist of the story is Ralph's mother. Ralph's mother is the antagonist because she doesn't want to let him grow up.
ReplyDeleteBrady,
DeleteWhat do you think motivates Ralph's mother to act the way she does?
Would you act differently if you were in her place? How? Why?
Ralph is one of the main characters and protagonists in the story. He is brave when he goes out of the hotel room to get medicine for Keith. Uncle Lester is the antagonist because he always tells Ralph what to do and is bossy. Keith is the other main character. The minor characters are,Ralph's mom, Keith's parents, Matt the bellhop, the dog and the man.
ReplyDeleteRalph is the protagonist because he was brave to go find the aspirin for Keith. Ralph’s mom and uncle are the antagonist becasue they are to bossy and will not let him grow up. Some more characters are the sleepy man with the dog and Matt the bellhop.
ReplyDeleteI think there is no real antagonist in this story.
ReplyDeleteWhat about the maid?
ReplyDeleteIn the BFG the

Minor characters are the Queen and the butler.
