Personification

Personification is when an author gives human traits or feelings to an inanimate object or an animal.

In The Mouse and the Motorcycle, Beverly Cleary has used this convention to bring Ralph S. Mouse to life.

Comment to this post with examples from the book where Ralph is acting like a boy, not a mouse.

  1. Ralph acts like a boy when he rides a motorcycle, when he talks and when he feels bad about losing the motorcycle.

  2. Canyon,

Would you agree that most of the time Ralph is acting like a boy?
Can you find examples in the story where he is acting like a mouse?

    1. I would agree that most of the time that Ralph is acting like a boy. He acts like a mouse when he eats crumbs off the floor of room 215.

  3. The mouse Ralph is always doing things in the story like a boy instead of a mouse. He worries about getting in trouble, he is excited about riding the motorcycle, he is scared of being trapped in the trash can and being killed like his Uncle was.

  4. Ralph acts like a human when he talks with words to the boy, Keith.

  5. Why do you think the author has Ralph act like a human?

Would the story be the same if it was the story of a boy rather than a mouse?

    1. The story would not be so interesting without the mouse.

  6. I think that Ralph acts human so that the boy can communicate with him. The story wouldn't be the same if the book was about a boy.

  7. Trenton,

I think you are right, if the mouse didn't communicate with the boy, then there wouldn't be a story!
If the story was about a boy growing up in a hotel, who meets a new boy with a toy motorcycle, what could happen?

  8. Ralph acts like a boy when he thinks his mom would never let him ride a motorcycle.

  9. I agree with Isabella Melton. Ralph acts like a boy, instead of a mouse, when he rides Keith's motorcycle.
