The BFG is a great book, and I hope you are enjoying reading it.
Let's talk about it a bit. What genre do you think it falls into?
Why do you think the author has the BFG jumble up his words so much?
Do you think the way he uses language is funny? Can you figure out
what words or phrases he is trying to use?
The BFG frequently uses idioms. An idiom is a type of figurative language, and also a type of simile or metaphor. What idioms can you find?

The author has the BFG use his words wrong simply for comedy, and to under he is a giant witch is told to be big and dumb such as when he said curiosity killed the rat meaning curiosity killed the cat that is also an example of a idiom.
ReplyDeleteJohn Paul,
DeleteI agree with your assessment. The way the giant uses language adds humor to the story. The author probably borrowed this idea from a play written a long, long time ago that had a character named Mrs. Malaprop. She made the same sort of mistakes when she was speaking. This idea was so popular in writing, that they gave it a name. Mistaking a word or phrase in a humorous way is called a malapropism.
Good catch on the idiom. Be careful about articles though. "An" is the proper article to use with a word that begins with a vowel.
i think The BFG is fantasy.he jumbles on his words because he never went to school so he is not that smart,so it makes him use his language funny.
ReplyDeleteWatch your grammar boys and girls. Please use proper grammar and punctuation when you are posting.
DeleteJulia, I agree that the genre is fantasy. The things the author describes couldn't really happen.
I think you are likely correct about the BFG's lack of education.
I think the book falls in the cateory of a story that is fantasy and fiction, so the unbelieveable can be made believeable.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Julia and John that that the author shows the giant to be sort of an idiot or a person without much education.
Yes the words are kinda funny but the words are unusual and different, I can't pronounce the words sometimes but I get the meaning by reading the sentence.
For instance, like the BFG is saying: 'By goggles', he said taking the jar out of the suitcase, 'your head is not quite so full of grimesludge after all"(pg.130-31).I think what the author means that BFG is saying is that "grimesludge really means that you are not so stupid after all.
I think it falls into fantasy and also fiction because giant aren't real.
ReplyDeleteHe jumbles up the BFG's words because he wants to make him seem stupid so when he learns how to speak it seems awesome.
Yes i do think the way the BFG talks is funny don't you. ;)
When the BFG uses 'Am I Right of am I Left ," he means am I Right of am I Wrong.
I'm not sure if this is a Idiom but my Idiom I found is "Like peas in a pod."
So am I right of am i left. ;D
i think that the bfg is fantasy only. the idiom i found was like peas in a pod.
